Cemetery Trustees

The Town of Hinsdale maintains six cemeteries of varying sizes:

Pike Cemetery located on Northfield Road (0.25 acres)
Hooker Cemetery located on Prospect Street (0.69 acres)
Fort Dummer Cemetery located off Old Brattleboro Road (0.210 acres)
Crowningshield Cemetery located on the Hinsdale/Chesterfield town line (0.23 acres)
Pine Grove Cemetery located on Depot Street (14 acres)
Oak Lawn Cemetery located on Meetinghouse Road (2.7 acres)

Of these six, Pine Grove and Oak Lawn are the only cemeteries with available plots.

Hinsdale cemeteries are managed by the Town of Hinsdale, overseen by three Cemetery Trustees who meet regularly throughout the year, along with a representative from the Select Board and the Cemetery Sexton. The Sexton oversees the seasonal maintenance of all of the cemeteries as well as works with local funeral directors and families to coordinate the burial of loved ones.

Cemetery System Future Plan

The Hinsdale cemetery system is running low on spaces for future burials. In order to increase the capacity of the system, the trustees are looking at several potential long-term solutions.

CEMETERY - RULES AND REGULATIONS

ARTICLE 1 General Regulations

The cemetery will be open to visitors during the daylight hours, children are no tpermitted unless accompanied by adults.

All persons are required to confine themselves to the roads and walks and avoid walking on lots.

No automobile or any other object on wheels, shall be allowed on the grass or lots or any part of the cemetery except the roads, without special permission from the superintendent.

No rapid driving will be allowed on any of the roads.

All persons are prohibited from writing upon, scratching, defacing, or injuring any monument or other structure in or belonging to the cemetery.

No person shall discharge a firearm in or adjacent to any cemetery. This prohibition shall not apply to authorized volleys at burial services.

No holes are to be dug to place vases in the ground, except by cemetery personnel. No urns are to be placed on any lot.

No trees, shrubs, or perennial plants shall be set out on any lot.

The superintendent will have the right to remove all flowers as soon as they fade or become unsightly if they are not removed by the family.

No flowers will be allowed to be planted in the ground, except directly in front of a monument, only then when the sod is neatly removed in front of monument and plants set out there, also that the sod and dirt be disposed of elsewhere than on any lot and this be approved by the superintendent of cemeteries.

No plantings around any head markers and all multi-grave lots will require comer posts.

Curbing, fences, comer posts, that are above the grade or level of the ground, statues, steps or vases, except flower holders, will not be allowed.

Cemeteries will be closed to all burials from November1st toApril30^thof each year, depending on ground conditions.

No artificial flowers, ornamentation, or solar lights will be allowed in the cemeteries.

ARTICLE II Sale of Lots

The lease of lots shall be under the control of the superintendent of cemeteries subject to the law pertaining there to. Persons desiring to lease lots should apply to the superintendent, who will inform the lease holder of the size and prices of lots and accompany buyer into the Cemetery where lots may be seen and a suitable selection made by conditional sales agreement. The lessee shall then present to the Town Clerk, a memorandum from the superintendent showing the lot selected together with payment in full.

ARTICLE III Transfer of Lots

The transfer of lots previously leased shall be registered with the Town Clerk by presentation of the original conditional deed, on the back of which is written “I hereby transfer to (name of new owner) (portion of lot),” and the endorsement of the original owner, his/her heirs or assigns. No person shall be recognized as lessee unless so recorded in the office of the Town Clerk. All leases must be approved by the Superintendent of Cemeteries.

ARTICLE IV Definition of Perpetual Care

Perpetual care shall include the cutting of grass upon the lot at reasonable intervals, the raking and cleaning of the lot, but it shall not include maintenance or repair of any monument or wall, nor plantings or care of flowers or shrubs unless they are more than 80years old and there are no available contacts. The minimum amount will not pay for a fall engrave.

ARTICLE V Monuments

Only one monument shall be allowed on any lot and a skirt or border extending at last three inches shall be built around the monument. Corner markers are required.

No head marker or comer stone shall be placed above the grade or level of any lot, unless the lot has previously so placed markers on the lot and it will be necessary to duplicate them.

Sizes, designs, locations and material for all monuments and markers or other structure must be submitted to the superintendent for approval.

All foundations for markers, monuments or any other object shall be constructed of concrete and shall be built under the directions and specifications of the superintendent.

No monument, head marker, cornerstone or any other obstruction shall be placed on any lot until said lot is paid for in full.

ARTICLE VI Interments

No interment shall be made until the superintendent shall have been furnished with such permits as may be required by law, together with an order from the proprietor of the lot or his/her legal representative. Orders must be given to the superintendent at least thirty-six hours before the time of interment and it is important that the proprietor or representative of a lot should give personal attention to the location of graves.

For unusual circumstances in the opening of a grave, such as removal of head markers, foundations, shrubs, stumps, ledges, etc. An additional charge maybe made by the superintendent according to the circumstances.

No grave will be opened during the winter months if snow or ice conditions prevent opening of roads in the cemetery.

ARTICLE VII Grading of Lots

The grading and sodding of all lots and the renovation of the same, must be done under the directions of the superintendent and made to conform to the section in which the lot is located.
